Toxic Toys… The Safer Alternative Bill

Some years ago, I did a few shows about the toxicity in toys for our children. Subsequently, more information has come to light about the harmful effects of these and many other chemicals put into items we use, eat and drink every day, and even the containers that are used today have very bad chemicals.

I would ask you all to approach your Rep and Senator, to co sponsor this bill. Of course, the bill didn’t make it out of the house last year, -Thanks Pam- and is once again, up for consideration. This seems to be a no brainer and I hope you would think so to. Pam and Karen are not listed as co sponsors.

How could anyone NOT support this bill? Did Karen and Pam vote against it, or just not co sponsor the bill?

Anon, Last year the Seante approved it and the hosue didn't. This year, neither our Reps have signed on to it. There must be some business connection here that I don't see, that keeps this from becoming law. I will continue to dig and see why this hasn't happened. But one thing that should be understood on this is that most of the toys for children ARE toxic and should not be purchased.

You're telling us that even on a bill to protect our children they can't see their way clear to supporting it? Can't be anything much simpler to support than that, which means someone's got a hidden agenda on this. It would be interesting to find out what that is. I do appreciate your digging into this Mr. Pillsbury and look forward to what you unearth in that dig.

Starting tomorrow, a federal law goes into effect, banning the manufacture and sale of toxic toys for kids under 12. There are very stiff fines for those who sell these toys, even in the re sale market. I'm truly sorry that some in our area will be adversely effected, but the fact remains, that lead and mercury are reeking havoc on our children's health and ours too.. but as adults we have better ways to cope, little kids can't. We have to draw the line somewhere with this pollution and now is the time. It's bad enough that the food that most of us grew up on, canned tuna, is not to be eaten by pregnant women and only sparingly by children, no more than once a week, but the toys that make their way to children's mouths have GOT TO BE toxic chemical free. Years from now, we will learn that these specific toxins are responsible for many of our children's health care problems and wonder why we didn't do more to protect them.

Nice comment Jim. You are so right, we are responsible for protecting our children, and if we fail, they will be asking us why when they are older and facing health issues. This bill should have had the support of everyone. What's the deal that it didn't?

Abby,

I received an e mail from Pam, regarding my question on why she didn't sign on to it, and who is behind stopping it. I'm still trying to find out who has submitted "Concerns about SB 2406". This document, I will try to get on the blog, but basically it's written to appose the new regs and the reasons seem to be driven by lobbyists and chemical producers. When I get the skinny on this, I will post, but as it stands now, there's a major lobbyists force apposing the bill and is why it didn't get further last year.
