Meals Tax and Town Meeting

I was surprised to see the process of deciding whether Framingham will adopt the meals tax. Mr. Noonan does what he can to real in the obscure but it does get out of hand quickly. Maintaining the stabilization fund is all well and good, 10 million in is better than the 5 million in now, according to the rating agencies, but at what point does this continual increase in taxes effect businesses here? Clearly, most people who can afford going out to dinner, could care less about any tax increase and will pay the extra. Tonight they decide hotel room tax... I can't see them saying no to this either. How lucky they are to have so many hotels and restaurants to feed off of.

Finally someone commenting on the idiots at town meeting who speak only so they can tell their friends and family to watch them on tv, not to bring anything of importance to the issue on the table. I wonder how much faster town meeting would progress if someone had to vette what people wanted to say before they actually got to the microphone. Might have more town meeting members if these meetings were not such a circus.

Not to sound stupid here, but can someone explain to me what exactly the stabilization fund is? Seems to be a big piece of this argument, and I don’t understand what it even is. Pillsbury, can you answer this?

Didn’t get the chance to watch last night, what was the outcome on this Pillsbury?Town meeting is getting to be more and more like a grammar school play. Moderator does a good job, and of course the CFO knows her stuff, but the people in town who are town meeting members seem to get less and less intelligent every meeting. Whats with that? Pillsbury, have you ever been a town meeting member yourself? Have not heard you say anything here about the wind turbine by-law. Is that on the schedule for the fall town meeting?

Af.. the fund is used like a rainy day fund, but it is one of the factors used in determining a bond rating, like our own credit scores, to determine financial worthiness for investment. The money can also be used at the discretion of those in power, with Town Meeting approval. But as we have seen over and over again, the money may not always be spent wisely.

Fred,

I used to film TM for cable years ago and do watch as much as I can. The times I have been there and witnessed first hand democracy in the making, makes me yearn for a city form of government.

Article 25 (wind turbine by law) is up in the warrant. It's worth supporting at this point and if it doesn't get approved, it will be because, it's way to technical for the common man and women to understand. So.. stay tuned.
