Mass Health, 295 million in the red
Get ready for another budget cut before July. Deval will be forced to do something about the huge and growing whole generated by Mass Health. The huge Mass Health program, 60% which is paid by the feds costs the State about 10 Billion a year out of the 27 Billion dollar budget. This program has nothing to do with the Health Care debate going on.
Our reserve fund in the State stands at 675 million and could be used to offset the gap this year. But the long term solution is jobs, cost control and fraud detection.

If it is costing us that much money I am not sure that it can actually be such a good program. I can not beleive we were paying that kind of money for the uninsureds medical care prior to this legislation passing. So we charge everyone in MA who does not have health care a penalty for not having it, and we charge those who can afford it a premium to cover their health care, and still we are this much in the hole on this thing? Something somewhere is not right here.
Sounds pretty expensive to me. We are cutting budgets everywhere are we cutting funding to this program? And if not, why is this not on the table? And if we are, then how exactly are we cutting this? I would think this has to be one of the most expensive, if not THE most expensive program the state has. Jim, is that correct?
I don’t get this. Why the hell is MA doing this if it is so expensive, and we don’t have to do it? I guess the question is does this work, and if it does, then maybe we stay the course. But if it is not working, which something tells me it isn’t, then this is a complete waste of money. Pillsbury, can you give us the pros and cons of this, is it a good investment for the state or should we shelve this entire program? Bottom line, which way is cheaper for the state, having this program, or not having this program?
Jim what impact will this health care reform bill have on us here in MA? Since it is now the federal government that requires everyone carry health care will it take the burden off of us here in MA to provide it for residents of this state?
