Gate House News bought by the Japanese

So instead of having the revenue stay in this country, we will now be sending it to Japan. It's all about revenue not journalism. They assure the President that they will grow jobs. Hard to imagine since most papers have forced to reduce staff from declining revenue and competition from the web and social media. No wonder Rick Holmes, the opinion editor left the MWDN.

Does it really make a difference to the news reported? I get that the money goes to Japan in some way, but we still have a local paper, with local reporters, and that is good, right? However, if the tenor of the paper, especially of the Opinion pages, changes significantly since the buy out by Japan, and the departure of Lodge and Holmes, then we will have something to complain about.

Is there anything owned by Americans anymore? I read somewhere that even those Trump hats saying Make America Great Again were made outside the U.S., probably in Mexico. He may need to find a new source of campaign paraphernalia when he runs again in 2020.

That being said, not sure I like the idea of our local paper being owned by a non-U.S. company. Anyone know anything about the new editors, both of the paper and the Opinion Page? Are they people who came up through the ranks of U.S. papers, or are they from another country that may have a different view on the role of the press? Our president certainly sees the press very differently than I think the majority of us do. Wonder if the new editor leans towards our view, or the new president’s view, of the press?

Last night at Ken's Steak House, we bid Rick and his family, safe travel in his RV. He wants to travel to the south, perhaps not the best time to be there if your a Yankee. His decades of service to this community will be missed. I did present him with a gold leaf marijuana pin for his years of support for the marijuana issue. I also gave him a miniature POW MIA flag, since he wrote lat year that all POW MIA flags should be taken down.

There was no mention of the buy out and it appears that he and Lodge have run up to the age when retirement happens. The new op-ed person may not have the historical knowldge of Rick and company, but it remains to be seen if that will effect the editorial page.

As Rick said last night, the newspaper business has had it's hey day and as you see now, local reporting takes a hit when revenues drop. I just hope the parent company leaves local news and the op-ed alone.
