Excuse my ignorance but why is hemp a big deal at all?

The short answer: It shouldn't be at all.... but as far back as 80 years ago our Federal Government influenced heavily by industrialists like DuPont who made the first petrochemical plastics and Randolph Hearst who owned most of all print papers along with much of the US timber industries didn't want to compete with hemp. So, they attached hemp with marijuana and began a war on hemp. The propaganda war was instigated to stop hemp from being cultivated in this country. Hemp can replace all of our oil-based plastics, paints, clothing, cosmetics, paper products, medicines, bio fuel, building materials and dozens of other products that cannot be recycled now. At the founding of this country, hemp was grown for its fibers for clothing, feed for animals, medicine and oil for heat, cooking and lighting.
It's all about protecting industries that have relied on fossil fuel to make their products along with the chemical companies who make their products from oil. Uncle Sam has demonized the plant to keep it from our everyday lives. In 1940 hemp was projected to be a billion dollar crop in the US, now it's billions in other countries pockets.

The Senate Majority McConnell is pushing the American Hemp Farm Bill.... personally, to the floor for a vote... is what I have read... so we wait. His hood is Kentucky whose farmers still hurting over tobacco loss have made old Mitch re-think his opposition to hemp. A few places have asked for permission to grow experimental plots but the DEA has stood in the way... as usual. Canada has already beaten us to the punch. and have been growing hemp since 2008.

Hemp is grown not mined or drilled for. It's a plant that can grow anywhere, pest resistant and drought tolerant. Takes no more of a carbon foot print than corn or sunflowers. Everything made from it can be recycled, food, clothing, oil, building materials and all of our plastics. The hemp fibers are some of the strongest natural fibers in the world.
