Finally wind turbines off our coast

I was a supporter of Cape Wind back in the day... I would have seen the turbines from my beach as the size of my thumb but the wealthy made sure it wouldn't happen there. And of coarse the cost per kilowatt was way over the top and the utility companies balked at the price. But now, with advances in turbine technology, the price point as Baker said last week in the debate makes them feasible. I hope in the next few years we see hundreds of them of the coast and we lead the country in wind energy.

From Mass Live:

Feds to auction off more areas along Mass. coastline for wind farms
From Shira Schoenberg at MassLive: “Nearly 400,000 acres of the Massachusetts Wind Energy Area will be up for grabs in December, as the Trump administration holds its next offshore wind auction, officials announced this week.  U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke revealed Wednesday that the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management will auction off 388,569 acres located on the Outer Continental Shelf offshore Massachusetts on Dec. 13.”

STick a turbine in front of Napoleon on a Tuesday night, he'll be good for a few megawatts.

Do these turbines need to be in water to be effectv e, or could we put one in other places here in Framingham?

So this is in Trump's hands? Forget it. He does not think there is any climate issues, so he is going to be all for coal and gas and oil and nukes. Forget getting wind turbines on his watch.

Can you put a wind turbine on your property like you can solar panels and if so what is the cost and who do I contact to do that? Does it require any permitting from the city to do this?

Gov Baker says he's on board with the new turbines off our coast. I don't think Trump will try to stop them.

The turbines that are going in wouldn't fit on anyone's property. There's just not enough wind here. Small wind turbines are around but Framingham passed by-laws preventing them here in Town.

The reason they are going off our coast is that the wind there is enough to make them profitable for electric companies to buy the electricity generated.

Thanks for the info. Guess no turbine in my back yard.

But this is big news for the south coast and New Bedford. The turbines and their platforms need a deep water port to assemble and receive the humongous blades. All good news for that port and all of Massachusetts.

Finally, New Bedford's terminal has a customer: Vineyard Wind
The state’s $133 million terminal has sat largely empty over the past four years. But Bruce Mohl at CommonWealth magazine reports the staging terminal for offshore wind developers finally has its first customer: Vineyard Wind, which has signed an 18-month, $9 million lease with the facility.

Unused for 4 years? Why did we build it if we did not need it? Was that terminal built with taxpayer dollars? Glad to see we will be using it finally.

This port was built under the Patrick Administration and was supposed to be used for Cape Wind... but that project was stopped.

New Bedford will see lot of jobs relating to off shore wind projects as more and more of shore leases are signed with uncle sam.

I predict in a few years you'll see dozens of utility grade turbines of our coast and we may even see more land based turbines as well.
