Another ticket quota system at the State Police

Just when I thought I had heard the end of the quote system at the now defunct Troop E, the Feds now say there was a second quota system in place called the "X Team" . That group was expected to hand out 12 citations in an 8 hour shift, overtime shift. Even the command staff and supervisors would scrutinize the Troopers if they didn't make their quotas.
The piece in the Globe was also about this Darren DeJong, retired last March, with a 75K a year pension, will be sentenced for his part in the fraud on May 1.
It will be telling to see what the Judge gives this former Trooper of 30 years. I wonder, if the motorists who were ticked on the Pike in the past few years would have any legal recourse. After all, the quote system that the cops say dosen't and never existed, was alive and well and may even by in play today. There's no question that the quota system is unconstitutional and the cops admit they did indeed have one, does that open the flood gates for massive appeals? After all, 12 tickets every 8 hours for the X Team and the other quota system was 8 tickets in a 4 hour shift, there could be thousands who were ticketed because of the illegal quota system.

My guess, ask a constitutional lawyer what he/she would say. I also think, the more that challenge as a group would have a better chance of winning.

And this surprises us why? If you have been paying attention then this should come as no surprise. Power corrupts and absolute power like the state police have corrupts absolutely.

Jim is right. You need to find a lawyer to do this as a class actions suit. Then you will win for sure.

some bright eager beaver lawyer may make a name for themselves to take this on. I only wish... I had a ticket then... but hell no.. i don't wish I got any kind of a ticket, the surcharges are over the top..

Did the state police here in MA do anything at all that was legal? Sure seems they spent all of their time gaming the system. This is not a few bad apples. This is a barrel of contaminated apples with a few good one trying to stay afloat. Shameful. What do we do about this?

The Governor is the only one who can fix this mess and he seems perfectly content to let these stories continue to come out and just avoid them. He needs to know that we are all watching. I encourage you to reach out to his office every time we hear some new story about the misdeeds of our state cops or of any other state agency. He is the ultimate person responsible and we should hold him accountable.

Surcharges yet another ridiculous program. Do these surcharges happen in other states or only here in MA? I would but those State Cops got a kickback from the insurance companies for writing all those tickets that result in the insurance companies making lots of extra money. There is a story there I am sure.

I am not sure I understand this story. Are you saying they wrote tickets to people who actually did not deserve them or are you saying they had to meet a certain number of tickets on each shift but the tickets were all to people who legitimately deserved the tickets? If it is the later of these two options, then I don’t see the problem. At least if they are writing tickets they are working, right?

Years and years ago when you were running for state rep you talked about establishing a home buyers club to deal with abandoned and neglected properties here in Framingham. All these years later I think this idea is still a good one. Any plans or interest in bringing that idea back to the table?

And that's part of the issue... the destroyed all the evidence of the tickets... no ticky.. no tracey.
There's no evidence written yet that would suggest ALL the tickets were bogus or not deserved, but if you knew you had to write so many an hour, I would guess, many were tickets that were questionable and perhaps could have or would have been appealed. Or ticketing cars in a rest stop, would would know?, if the paperwork wasn't submitted to the RMV or courts. Just a guess on my part. Just doing some math... a couple thousand a year maybe
If all the tickets were legit, then they wouldn't have destroyed the copies. It was all done by hand, no one checked anyone's tickets.

Same old same old. If we put together all the stories about corrupt state agencies that have come out in the past year the book would be too have for any of us to lift. Welcome to MA.

Did not know about them destroying the evidence. That puts a whole new light on this subect don't you think?

on top of that.. The Governor put a stop to the State Police plan to destroy boxes of old payroll records< more smoking guns.
The Feds must be cross referencing every shift and the tickets that were used but not turned into RMV as proof they were working those shifts, all 46 of them.
I just hope there's some relief for those who were ticketed unfairly.

I can't afford to get the Globe so appreciate your posting stories here. Us seniors have to watch our pennies.

well at least the governor did stop them from destoying those records. the fact they though they could do that and get away with it is pretty shocking. shows they have pretty much had free reign to do whatever they wanted for a long time

the buyers club.... I remember now. I had to ask Steph when I suggested that idea. I think back then there were hundreds of foreclosures in the Ham. Perhaps you see more houses, but I don't see many that are abandoned. The one down the road from me was condemned and sat around for 2 years before it sold and is now being rehabbed. And back then, I was still strong enough to carry a bundle of shingles up a ladder... now I couldn't imagine doing it.
Thanks for the reminder
