Getting on the Pike at exit 13

I'm sure by now, those of you who travel the Pike in the morning, getting on at exit 13 is a nightmare, in both directions on Rte 30. The toll booths are down and there's little construction going on. One might have thought since it's summer now and the kids are out of school, it would be easier to get on. I've written to the Mass DOT for their comments. There must be a explanation for this as our population has not increased that much to cause such delays.

So I wrote to MasssDot.. and they replied.

Dear James,

Thank you for contacting the MassDOT Highway Division to make a report regarding the traffic congestion at the I -90 Interchange 13 on ramp from Rte. 30. The District Traffic section will review the location to see if any modifications can be made to improve the flow of traffic while construction work is ongoing.

If you need any additional assistance or information, please do not hesitate to contact MassDOT Highway District Three at (508)929-3948.

Sincerely,

MassDOT District Three Highway Feedback

Dear Mr. Pillsbury,

I'm impressed with their speedy reply.

The District Construction section provided the following update regarding the I -90 Interchange 13 on ramp from Rte. 30 that we wanted to share with you.

The contractor has been doing work behind barrier in the area between the I-90 on ramps at IC-13. There are not fewer lanes, but it the lanes are narrower with the barrier in place so the traffic is restricted. The good news is that the contractor has now finished the work in this phase of construction and will be removing the barrier in the section today and restriping the wider lanes tomorrow. This should improve the traffic flow. When the project is completed this fall, there will be an additional lane in the connector road to the on-ramps and to effectively move more vehicles.

Can't believe you got a response! I never even thought of contacting them, have just been cursing them loudly as I sit in traffic every morning for more than 30 minutes trying to get on the Pike. Hooray for you, and for the good news in their response

Well it's July 21 and the time to get on the Pike is approaching an hour on Rte 30 from Beacon. Since the tolls have been taken down, the traffic jam has gotten worse. At least when the tolls were there.. motorists had to stop or slow down for a split second.. allowing drivers in the left lanes to get on the Pike heading east. I don't know what the possibilities are for the entrance ramp to the Pike, but something has to be done as the nightmare will only get worse when students and everyone is back from vacation.
Bring back the toll booths is a suggestion one driver has.
