FDA approves first whole marijuna drug Epidiolex..DEA has 90 days to re-clasify
The big news is that the FDA has made it clear that marijuana does not belong in schedule 1 (LSD and heroin are in schedule 1) This means that the DEA will be forced to re-schedule marijuana to Schedule 2 or 3. And today Bayer has announced it will partner with another company to begin research on the other components of marijuana for medicine. Big pharma will jump into this across the country.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved Epidiolex
(cannabidiol) [CBD] oral solution for the treatment of seizures
associated with two rare and severe forms of epilepsy, Lennox-Gastaut
syndrome and Dravet syndrome, in patients two years of age and older.
This is the first FDA-approved drug that contains a purified drug
substance derived from marijuana. It is also the first FDA approval of a
drug for the treatment of patients with Dravet syndrome.
CBD is a chemical component of the Cannabis sativa plant, more
commonly known as marijuana. However, CBD does not cause intoxication or
euphoria (the “high”) that comes from tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
It is THC (and not CBD) that is the primary psychoactive component of marijuana.
“This approval serves as a reminder that advancing sound development
programs that properly evaluate active ingredients contained in
marijuana can lead to important medical therapies. And, the FDA is
committed to this kind of careful scientific research and drug
development,” said FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, M.D. “Controlled
clinical trials testing the safety and efficacy of a drug, along with
careful review through the FDA’s drug approval process, is the most
appropriate way to bring marijuana-derived treatments to patients.
Because of the adequate and well-controlled clinical studies that
supported this approval, prescribers can have confidence in the drug’s
uniform strength and consistent delivery that support appropriate dosing
needed for treating patients with these complex and serious epilepsy
syndromes. We’ll continue to support rigorous scientific research on the
potential medical uses of marijuana-derived products and work with
product developers who are interested in bringing patients safe and
effective, high quality products. But, at the same time, we are prepared
to take action when we see the illegal marketing of CBD-containing
products with serious, unproven medical claims. Marketing unapproved
products, with uncertain dosages and formulations can keep patients from
accessing appropriate, recognized therapies to treat serious and even
fatal diseases.”
Dravet syndrome is a rare genetic condition that appears during the
first year of life with frequent fever-related seizures (febrile
seizures). Later, other types of seizures typically arise, including
myoclonic seizures (involuntary muscle spasms). Additionally, status
epilepticus, a potentially life-threatening state of continuous seizure
activity requiring emergency medical care, may occur. Children with
Dravet syndrome typically experience poor development of language and
motor skills, hyperactivity and difficulty relating to others.
Lennox-Gastaut syndrome begins in childhood. It is characterized by
multiple types of seizures. People with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome begin
having frequent seizures in early childhood, usually between ages 3 and
5. More than three-quarters of affected individuals have tonic seizures,
which cause the muscles to contract uncontrollably. Almost all children
with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome develop learning problems and intellectual
disability. Many also have delayed development of motor skills such as
sitting and crawling. Most people with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome require
help with usual activities of daily living.
“The difficult-to-control seizures that patients with Dravet syndrome
and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome experience have a profound impact on these
patients’ quality of life,” said Billy Dunn, M.D., director of the
Division of Neurology Products in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation
and Research. “In addition to another important treatment option for
Lennox-Gastaut patients, this first-ever approval of a drug specifically
for Dravet patients will provide a significant and needed improvement
in the therapeutic approach to caring for people with this condition.”
Epidiolex’s effectiveness was studied in three randomized,
double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials involving 516 patients
with either Lennox-Gastaut syndrome or Dravet syndrome. Epidiolex, taken
along with other medications, was shown to be effective in reducing the
frequency of seizures when compared with placebo.
The most common side effects that occurred in Epidiolex-treated
patients in the clinical trials were: sleepiness, sedation and lethargy;
elevated liver enzymes; decreased appetite; diarrhea; rash; fatigue,
malaise and weakness; insomnia, sleep disorder and poor quality sleep;
and infections.
Epidiolex must be dispensed with a patient Medication Guide that
describes important information about the drug’s uses and risks. As is
true for all drugs that treat epilepsy, the most serious risks include
thoughts about suicide, attempts to commit suicide, feelings of
agitation, new or worsening depression, aggression and panic attacks.
Epidiolex also caused liver injury, generally mild, but raising the
possibility of rare, but more severe injury. More severe liver injury
can cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fatigue, anorexia, jaundice
and/or dark urine.
Under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA), CBD is currently a
Schedule I substance because it is a chemical component of the cannabis
plant. In support of this application, the company conducted nonclinical
and clinical studies to assess the abuse potential of CBD.
The FDA prepares and transmits, through the U.S. Department of Health
and Human Services, a medical and scientific analysis of substances
subject to scheduling, like CBD, and provides recommendations to the
Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) regarding controls under the CSA.
DEA is required to make a scheduling determination.

Good news, right?
Hope you are going to be at the district council meeting tonight. we need your voice
Excellent news
Rescheduling mj is even bigger news
I will be there
Glad you are attending tonight. Your voice has been missing far too long from these discussions.
Lets hope that the facts prevail tonight. Great column in MWDN and Source Jim. You are spot on
so the goal tonight is what? to beat up on giombetti?
I think the goal is to make sure the voters voice is heard and respected. Jim has always been fighting for that.
Great job tonight Jim. You were the rational, intelligent and responsible voice tonight. That decorum suits you well. Hope to see more of this from you
Lots of talk last night most from people who had no idea what they were talking about. You stood out in that quagmire as the most knowledgeable and Concilor Grove stood out as the most ignorant on the issue. What in gods name is her problem? And why is she talking to the mayor alone about issues the impact all the residents not just her district? She comes across on this issue as arrogant and ignorant and that is too bad because at one time I had a lot of respect for her but no more
Heard Judy Grove say she has "facts" from doc saying pot is dangerous. I am curious where exactly these facts came from since the DEA says you can't test pot because it has no valid use. Did the doc steal pot from someone to test it? Now that make me feel real confident about results of tests performed by a thief on a drug the federal government says you can not test.
This is the url for those who would like to see the madness.. starts at 38.56

A few of the outrageous amendments to Art 5.. no ingestion of mj on public property, no clubs or membership clubs and the best, your pot at home has to be in a locked box
Art 8, smoke or aroma would be considered a nuisance violation.
Councilperson Grove has lost all objectivity and is clearly spoon fed propaganda and junk science. The overlay district proposal severely restricts where a pot shop can go. It excludes south of Rte 9 entirely along with Nobscot and Saxonville. The decisions by the Task Force to restrict any pot shop close to residential is just plain stupid, arbitrary and without reason. Poor Sam the advocate, he is still a fish out of water. It will come up on the 25th, when allegedly, the Mayor will weigh in. A must see.
Again Ms Grove is still arguing legalization and is terribly mis-informed. I'm looking forward to see that research, must have been done at home.
I'll bet by now, since Grove was not a Spice supporter, the Mayor is sick and tired of Grove and her rant. Grove is just not willing to except real facts and is content with her own form of fake news.
I was heartened when I saw people who I don't know, speak up against the overlay district.
Glad to see King call out Grove for her unethical speaking to the Mayor without other DC involved. I think Grove needs to take a public meeting law class
Good point
I had to leave before i threw up on Hugo's head, but saw it on replay.
when is this bull going to stop we voted the decision is made who are these people who feel entitled to say they know what we were thinking when we voted they act like framingham is duxbury look around you people we are not a high class city we are a working class city we have a poor downtown we have general chemical we have a prison and you idiots are worried about a few retail pot shops lets get real here framingham is not going to lose any value because a few new stores open in fact the money the city gets from those new stores could help revitalize downtown and pay to clean up general chemical which will both improve our property values isnt't that a win for everyone
I agree with the last poster. Enough is enough. With all the issues we are facing in Framingham, including those the previous poster mentions, should we really be spending all this time on pot shops? I don't think so. Let's get to work on the real issues that we elected you to do something about
Anyone submitting any amendments to this ridiculous bylaws they’re trying to shove down our throats
Good idea. How do you submit an amendment? Jim are you on this? On another note what’s up with Audrey ignoring the recognized expert on this topic?
No locking up our pot!
I'm looking for the amendments now
locking up our pot.. geez.. do they make us lock up our prescriptions now?
and who will enforce this? what a crazy idea. I can see locking up our guns and ammo
will they make us lock up our booz?
Audrey has always been against anything marijuana and I don't know why
She has always resented the fact that our shows were better than the shows produced by AF TV for her.
Her party loyalty and wanting to be liked by all in the local government is just opposite of who I am.. and she hates that.
Her's is to kiss ass.. mine is to kick it
Jim, you need to focus on your goal. Why are you diverting attention to your past issues with Access TV folks? That DOES NOT HELP your cause. The show which interviewed Lynch helped your cause, why start a pissing match with the Access people when they are helping you?
The subject matter has been marginalized by a few in Town. The truth has a hard time getting out. Because of a few hard liners running everything in this Town makes it more difficult for me. Since they stopped my show, I've had to fight to get the information out. Thats all... I was just venting my frustration with them all. Bill's a great guy... and I appreciate his effort... but there is much he dosen't know and Audrey knows that.
Jim you are making the same mistake the Riz brothers made years ago. You are taking it too personally - again focus on the prize. If you have a beef with the Access people, find others like Bill to go on their shows. Look at Bill, he helps promote your cause and you give him this back handed comment, essentially saying "well he doesn't know as much as me". Keep your cool with Grove, Giombetti, and the others. You have general public support right now, don't piss it away.
