Some of our readers may be vaping either THC or nicotine. There's been a lot of noise on broadcast media about the people around the country who have become very ill from vaping. Some say it's the added chemicals to the oils that are causing this to happen.
The CDC in the USA Today piece is criticized by experts as being overly vague in it's warning's. Either way, vapers should only be vaping cartridges from reliable suppliers, like medical or licensed retail marijuana shops. There is much doubt about how this has all of a sudden appeared on the collective radar. Millions of x-cigarette smokers have been vaping for a few years now along with thousands of medical marijuana patients without adverse health effects. The CDC should forensically find the root cause and do it quickly. And until then, patients and non-patients should use the vape pens less or switch to an edible, or if you can, consume the flower like before we had vape pens.
Federal health officials are under
fire for their unclear public warnings after one death and nearly 200
cases of vaping-related lung illnesses, which some say are related to the
far riskier practice of vaping marijuana oil rather than nicotine.
Some state health department and
news reports suggest many of the cases of lung problems
involve tetrahydrocannabinol, known as THC, the chemical in marijuana that
causes psychological effects.
Boston University public health
professor Michael Siegel said the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention is being “unnecessarily vague” about describing the injuries as
simply vaping-related when many people might have been injured by vaping THC
oil.
“Based on what we know now, I think
there’s enough to tell people: Don’t vape THC oils – especially products that
are bought off the street,” Siegel said. "There are certain things the
agency could be recommending right now that could potentially save lives and
prevent this from happening by being much more specific.”

with his sister, Andrea, was rushed to the hospital with severe breathing
problems after he vaped nicotine and THC oil. Doctors put him into a
medically induced coma and hooked him up to a ventilator. (Photo: Rick

The CDC, the Food and Drug
Administration and state health agencies say they are completing the
painstaking work of tracing common factors that may have triggered the spate of
vaping-related lung illnesses mainly harming young adults.
Siegel acknowledged he is not privy
to all the information the CDC has gathered. The agency probably does not know
whether THC is the only culprit, he said, but the public would likely benefit
if the agency warned vapers to avoid THC oil.

“There are millions of people vaping
out there,” said Siegel, who supports vaping as a way for adults to quit
smoking. “When they get this advice ‘Well, we don’t know what it
is; it’s vaping,’ that doesn’t help anyone. So I think they need to try to
be specific."

I can't help but wonder if some of this is just looking to cast doubt on the safeness of vaping. As you say, people have been doing this for years, why suddenly all the issues?
I think we need to know more but if people are dying then we need to know more now. This is a public health threat so why aren't we getting more information on this? Especially concerning as it impacts kids also.
Haven't people been doing this for years? Why problems now?
I read something this morning about this being from the black market suppliers. Anyone know if that is true, and how do these black market operators get their customers?
https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/as-vaping-related-lung-illnesses-spike-investigators-eye-contaminants/2019/08/29/cfe26032-ca78-11e9-be05-f76ac4ec618c_story.html
According the the Post... officials now seem to say, that black market forces are using adulterated fluids in the cartridges to make the marijuana oils thinner and easier to vaporize. The good news, if there is any, is that no licensed dealers have had any issues with their highly regulated cartridges. It also mentions people can get the unregulated cartridges on the web as well. It will be interesting to see what if anything is in the e-cigarettes that make people sick. Similar in many ways to when people made home-made alcohol in their bath tubes.
In a few of the States, the age to buy cigs is NOT 21. So teenagers can get these e-cigs in any store and on the web. Raising the age to 21 is not a bad idea
Interesting, and thanks for sharing the info on this. I suspect kids buy this stuff on the web as they are less cautious than adults and are more concerned with saving money. So how come these on line and pop up stores are not subject to the same regulations as others selling the legal version of this stuff?
What is the age for buying these products here in Framingham and are there any of these "pop up" stores here that are selling black market products? I know there are several vaping stores. Does the board of health check to make sure they are only selling approved and regulated products?
I think I read somewhere the synthetic pot was dangerous. Is this some of that same thing do you think?
If there is a reason for black markers pot it is because of the excessive fees these shops need to pay cities and towns to sell in their communities. Thus iso. The greedy police
synthetic pot is manufactured to look like marijuana in a dried form with added ugly chemicals designed to mimic marijuana.
The stuff in the black market cartridges is not fully know yet. I suspect it's those added agents that are causing the severe sickness in young adults who want to save a few bucks. Similar to when Gin was made in bathtubs, no one knew what was in it, until they died.
You can't buy legal cartridges from a head shop, only medical and retail stores approved to operate by the state. Everything the sell is tested in a qualified testing facility.
I quit smoking 5 months ago. Now started to take vape after that. i would love to vaping weed forever.
Btw nice post.
the Globe reports that according to the FDA, the chemical found in the cartridges used by marijuana users who have gotten ill, is vitamin E.
The question now is... does Mass allow the use of vitamin E in medical cartridges?
Regular old Vitamin E or some special derivative? Seems funny that E would be the culprit when so many people take vitamin E pills for their health, doesn't it? Don't make sense to me.
I would agree... but the truth will be discovered by science and not by clausal connection. The next time I visit the medical store I'll ask if our stuff has Vitamin E in it. Perhaps our regulations don't allow it, but they all use something to thin out the cannabis oils and I have heard in the past some bootleggers were using glycol (antifreeze).
