The Superintendent's response, Charlie Richards, Student Survey

Last night's school committee meeting was jammed packed with interesting information.

The MTA and a few parents railed on Trembley about what was recorded heard in executive session. His response starts at 45:51. But before you listen to that, check out the public comments. Seems to me we have serious problems of unruly children and teachers scared and being hurt.

A student survey was conducted at the HS at 1:04:30. The survey was answered by 749 students (72%) and as you will see, most students feel that the school is doing well in recycling.  As I can personally attest from being in the cafeteria at lunch time for two years registering kids to vote, recycling was not being done at all.

Lastly, last night on channel 5, they did a story on a young blind man who is a camera guy at the school channel. It's a heart warming story about perseverance. Worth a watch

No worries Jimbo. Nothing will ever be pinned on Teflon Bob. There's always someone else to blame it on.

I thought Tremblay was doing a good job until I watched this and saw parents and teachers comments. A teacher with a broken wrist from a student? That is a big issue and the fact parents were not notified is concerning. Sounds like safety is a big issue at some of our schools and I did not hear anything definitive last night as to how to address this.

Didn't the school committee just give the superintendent a 6 year contract? If so, was that because they were not aware of these issues, or they ignored them? If they were not aware then Tremblay is being non-transparent and the School Committee is not doing their job. You don't offer a 6 year contract without making sure that things are going well. But sounds like they did just that. Sloppy work on the part of the School Committee and now we are stuck with this guy for 6 more years.

This is going to end up as another law suit against Framingham. Better to give the teachers a raise than tom spend the same amount of money paying Petrini to defen if you ask me

If they reakky are not recycling in the cafeteria at the high school how do we address that Jim? Ideas?

Tremblay did a good job of apologizing but it does not erase the damage done. Our school, or at least Stapleton, sound like unsafe places and we send our young and vulnerable kids there to learn. With a mayor who touts her education background I think we should clearly be doing better. Not an easy fix, but it does not appear that the administration or the elected are doing enough to address. Fist step would be transparancy. Why did we not know a teacher got a broken wrist at school caused by a student?

I saw the survey results and they don’t make sense. Any way to verify the data they used?

the HS doesn't seem to be recycle ready... most of the goods end up in the trash containers. My thought was to educate the HS kids about the importance of recycling.
I had a meeting with Mat Torti last year and he said it's difficult to get kids to recycle bottles and cans as many are still filled with liquid. He did say he'd be open top any suggestions but I've not yet come up with an answer.

Like the vaping/bullying survey done two years ago with a small number of HS students participating, no one from the school committee challenged the results.
I asked School Committee Chair Adam F about the erroneous conclusions of that survey, which was to go along with the narrative put out by the school and the BOH, but he didn't respond.

I hope everyone had the chance to see the piece about Charlie. A very inspiring piece.

Had a chat with a teacher (name withheld) and it certainly does seem that the school’s hands are tied in many ways. Many troubled students come from a family who themselves are in some sort of crisis. Kids get suspended all the time but that doesn't seem to bother them. Parents or guardians are not well equipped to deal with unruly children for a number of reasons. And I only know what I read and hear.
BUT... how in the world do we expect kids to learn when the teachers are if fear of the children they teach. The schools can't be the end all in solving problems at home, BUT we need to provide a safe working environment for the kids and the teachers.
Ultimately something must change and if it means expelling kids that are dangerous until they learn to be respectful to teachers and other kids, then so be it. Perhaps a night school for them along with intense counseling. Which means we will spend more money on the trouble makers, but what price do we pay for a teacher who has been hurt.
As Bob Trembley said, no easy fixes for this problem.

Very good commentary Jin, and very true. Let's see if anyone in a position to do these things is listening
