School Committee meeting last night

I posted the agenda with approximate times for each subject. The meeting went to 11PM. It's clear there's no clarity yet on how and when kids return to learning and teachers feel safe to go back into the buildings or how to better increase participation among students.
This is a monumental task for Bob Trembly and all his leadership team. But it does make some sense to get the SPED kids back. I did hear the words "split sessions" come up. All idea's have major reasons why they can't work. But one thing is for sure, the amount of money that must be spent to keep everyone safe will dramatically increase. Let's hope the Fed's kick in those funds without black mailing schools.

The discussion about SRO's was disappointing.

How effective can they be at 11pm at night?

I agree this is going to be incredibly expensive, and there is no guarantee of money from anyone. So what happens if we don't get the Federal or State money we are expecting. Do we have a fall back plan?

This is still a moving target so to say. It is like planning for the birth of your child on a specifc date when you are not doing a C Section. To many variables here to be sure what we will be dealing with in a month's time. I did like the suggestion that we delay opening until Oct. 1st to see how it goes in other communities. We did that before approving pot shops, or at least that was an option suggested. IMHO I doubt we are going to be back to normal in any way this fall, so we are reinventing the wheel and need to look at a lot of different options. We are lucky to have Dr. Trembly leading this effort. Some of our previous Superintendents would have been in over their heads for sure, but Trembly bas impressed me.

Every single school district in MA is doing exactly the same thing we are doing here in Framingham but we act as if we are the only ones facing this crisis. Our elected need to get their act together and do their jobs. Tough job, but they all signed up for it. I applaud Trembley and Friedburg but many of the other players are just in this to make a name for themselves. Surprise, you actually have to work when you are elected to these positions so do it.

I have one question. Where the hell is the money going to come from to implement a plan that will require lots and lots of additional expenses?

I think every school district in the Commonwealth is expecting the funds from the feds. I don't believe we have enough money in reserve to fund everything that may make it possible for the kids to return, even part time.
Air flow in rooms is something I have some experience in while at Bio Gen and Vertex. None of our schools to my knowledge were built to exchange air to the levels needed to insure nothing is floating in the air. Not to mention hepa filters in the air handlers. This stuff is huge money and I'm betting every other community that can afford such items have the same idea.

I wonder how much more it would costs to split the school day, 5K kids in the morning and 5K kids in the afternoon. Perhaps there's enough space to accommodate smaller class size with social distancing in mind. I heard Bob say the number of school days and hours will be reduced by the State which may help in the end of this coming school year.

Are the unions going to back any plan or are they just saying no way to in school classes? I feel for them. They are between a rock and a killer virus and are the most vulnerable.

Today schools are so much more to kids and parents than they were in my day.

If day cares are a problem then parents cannot go back to work if their kids are not in school. This impacts everything but no real guidance from the feds. Just another example of how bad this so called president is

Did they talk about bussing at all? How can you possibly keep kids 6 feet apart on a bus unless there are only 10 kids to a bus and that can't be cost effective?

When the school budget was submitted how much were they asking for to handle these additional expenses related to bringing students and teachers back to the classroom setting in a safe way? Or did they not budget for this and are expecting to get money from the feds or state, money which I think is highly unlikely to arrive? And if I am right, then how does all this stuff like PPE, plexiglass dividers and potential longer days for teachers get paid for?

None of the Covid expenses were in the first school budget. As you see in the replay, the schools can't possibility have enough money for PPE, buses, bus drivers, monitors, air handlers, etc, etc.
I don't have a good felling about the fed money. Maybe Baker, DeLeo and Splika will let go some rainy day money from the State to help, but it may not be enough.

I'm so sad my grandchildren have to be a part of this mess and my one son-in-law who is a teacher.

Are you in favor of those grandchildren, and son-in-law, going back to school? And if so, do you think they should wear masks?

I think we will all wear masks until next year or until multiple vaccines are out. The Chinese and others have been wearing masks for various reasons for years now.

I'm not in favor at this point.

I'd be worried sick every day if they did go back.

Yeah I worry too about my grandkids going back. Both of my sons are against the kids being required to wear masks. How did I raise such dumb kids?

geez... I feel for ya. You have to have hope they will see the light or at least the dark side in other states.
I'm not sure what two of mine are saying about their kids in masks at school. I don't dare ask.
