The hunt for a new Police Chief

Looks like the Mayor has been taking applications for the job for some time now. I wonder who was in the "assessment group" and who whittled it down to 6, then 4, now just two. I'd like to know who the passed over candidates were. IMO, it makes no sense to hire someone from out-of-state and especially from Baltimore. And lets face it, it doesn't matter what we think at all in hiring a Police Chief.

Framingham Conducting a Zoom Community Meeting Monday, October 26, to Allow Residents to Virtually Meet, Hear from and Ask Questions of the Two Finalists for City’s Chief of Police

Framingham, MA –Framingham to choose between two for the City’s Chief of Police position - Lester Baker (Deputy Chief of the Framingham Police Department) and James H. Rhoden Jr., (Major/Commander of the Baltimore Police Department). On Monday, October 26, at 5 p.m., the Framingham community is invited to a Zoom meeting to get to know the two candidates better.

Mayor Yvonne M. Spicer will moderate the Zoom Community Meeting. Each candidate will be given equal time to provide an overview of his vision for the Framingham Police Department and answer questions from the Framingham community.

If people cannot attend the Zoom Community Meeting and have questions, please email kmcfalls@framinghamma.gov with the subject line: October 26, Framingham Police Chief Candidate Zoom. A recording of the meeting will be provided to everyone who emails a question(s). Click here for information on how to join the virtual discussion.

Twenty-one people initially applied for the Framingham Chief of Police position. Of the 21, six were chosen to participate in an assessment center, from which four were selected for interviews. The two finalists were confirmed following the interviews.

Isn't Baltimore one of the cities that has been in trouble for racial issues?

The answer so far is yes.. here's the links. There seems to be a question that should be asked of him about racism.

Didn't this guy from Baltimore just wait until the last minute to turn down being the chief in Milford and say he turned it down because he did not want to move to that area? So what is different with moving to this area now? Past actions indicate he will turn Framingham down also I think

it's disappointing that he was a finalist to begin with. Is the Mayor that tone deaf?

my questions of them both:
For Mr. Rhoden:

In light of the report from the Justice Department in August of 2016 that concluded that BPD engages in a pattern or practice of conduct that violates the Constitution or federal law. Why would we consider anyone from BPD to take charge of FPD with that type of record?

For Mr. Baker, You were on the force when Eurie Stamps was killed in his own home. He was not a threat, compliant and not part of the investigation that brought the SWAT Team out, as one of the few black men on the force, was his killing justified?

And was the lack of accountability of the white police officer who shot him disturb you?

Given the historical record of bad behavior of a few of the rank and file members, how do you restore the confidence in FPD that residents are demanding?

We’ve legalized marijuana for medical and recreational use in 2012 and 2016, which has led to an overall decrease in arrests, investigative and court time, yet we continue to see arrests, would you consider making marijuana arrests the lowest priority at FPD?

Do you believe FPD could play a more active role in helping enforce covid guidelines? With the crime rate continually dropping here in Framingham, why should we be hiring more officers? How does a Deputy Police Chief make 2K in detail pay when the others haven’t had any detail pay in 2020?

It appears Mr. Baker had the questions ahead of time and read his opening statement. Relies on the Flagg report for what's best for the department. 100 people on the zoom meeting as of 5:20PM.

I am so disappointed... neither one is right for the job I'm affarid. Is this the best the Mayor's team could come up with?
