Fraud Alert.. check washing is the newest threat

I'm sure you've heard of the relatively new form of theft.. from the mail box... check washing. The criminals have figured out a way to wash your checks and re-write them for another amount, cash them and be on their way. AARP (Shari Harrar) this month wrote an informative piece about check washing. Although one of her suggestions is to pay on-line, many older people still pay with checks. The big takeaways are write your checks using black or blue non- erasable ink, don't leave your mail in your mail box over night and don't leave your mail in the blue outside boxes at the post office. Thieves have been steeling the master keys to those boxes lately.
