The Enviromental Police are in the news ... again

Worthy of a watch is the Channel 5 report last night about another case of poor or no management at the Environmental Police dept. As you may remember, we wrote about how a personal friend of Gov Baker was caught fudging his OT requests.
Now we hear that this million dollar plus boat used specifically for anti-terrorism duties sits idle more that 70% of the time and when it is deployed, you guessed it, the employees are padding their salary with detail pay.

A top of the line counter terrorism boat with a $1.7 million price tag, taxpayers footed the bill for it to help protect the Bay State, but the boat rarely goes out on patrol. It's a pattern 5 Investigates observed day after day, week after week.

In 2019, Sgt. Eric Baldwin was paid $202,758, more than half of it for overtime and private details. For the last three years, Baldwin has been the highest earner in the entire Secretariat of Energy and Environmental Affairs, which includes the environmental police and 15 other departments.

Is it just me or does it seem that Chanel 5 has become the watchdog for state agencies breaking the law, sort of doing the job the governor is paid to do

Who was the person or person who decided we needed this boat in the first place? That is what I would like to know. And if the boat never goes out, what is the guy making all the overtime doing on those overtime shifts if he is not taking the boat out?

The boat was purchased through a grant from the feds, since there were threats of terrorism at places like the CNG facility in Boston harbor. The other mission of this boat was to enforce our fishing laws of our coast.

Thank goodness for the investigative teams at the Globe and Channel 5. You and I would NEVER know anything about any of this without them. As long as the ratings are good for TV news, advertising dollars will keep the reporters on staff.
