last night's council meeting 8.4.20

So the council voted in favor of the moratorium, no big surprise there
Drolling Shen's Black Lives Matter Resolution was sent back to sponsor's because Shen didn't consult with the black community before asking Janet and Phil to sponsor. Shen wants to be the center of this movement but lacks the credibility to lead. Just because he's in the Democratic Town Wide Committee means nothing to many is this Town.

The question I have repeatedly asked Cannon and King is where did the money (350K) go into from the host agreement fees the cannabis companies paid as part of the 3% host agreement fees? During the CFO's budget presentation I didn't see anything related.

Lastly.. the Mayor's last two community Zoom meetings are now on Gov TV.

This one is the Mayor trying to convince the CC to not approve the moratorium

This one is about racism with guest speakers NOT from Framingham

It was a political pony show with the BLM item. Janet, Phil, and Duba were more concerned about getting their name attached to it then reaching out to the different groups. Stay tuned, it won't be long before we see a Janet selfie with her dog down on 135.

I have to say I was surprised by DC Leombruno and Ottiviani supporting Mr. Sen not taking input from others in the community. Why do they think it is ok for him to prevent others also very active in the BLM movement from having a say in what is included in the resolution? Mr. Sen has a reputation for taking credit for others work, and he is an agitator, not a person who tries to build a community. That is why his Friday night standouts are so poorly attended. Why did he not reach out to the Black Student Union for their input? They have organized more, and more successful, events than Mr. Sen. Those two DCs are on the wrong side of this and I am glad to see the other councilors support having input from others in the community who have been so active in the BLM movement. I am not saying what Mr. Sen did was bad, only that it was typical of him, garner all the attention for himself even when others have done all the work.

I think the idea of a resolution/proclamation is a good one. But the language did not require the city to do anything specific, so what is the purpose?

It's symbolic at best but it does show that the City is aware or tries to be aware of what's happening around the country and even here in the Ham. The senseless and racist brutality seen here and elsewhere needs to be acknowledged and acted upon. This resolution should be representative of how we feel as a community about how Black lives Matter.

The only person who can truly do something is the Mayor but she seams tone deaf.

I agree with the first post. It’s all for show. Except it won’t be Leombruno taking selfies. It will be the Source with its usual positive spin on her friends in power.

If we wait for the mayor to address this issue we will have a very long wait. Shame on Mayor Spice for not taking the lead on this. I am hopeful with input from others this will be a much more beneficial resolution than the one presented by Ottiviani and Leombruno

What should Mayor Spicer be doing for BLM? If she is out there holding a sign, the Spicer haters will just say she should be working on the budget, or corona, or whatever and that all she cares about is Black Lives Matter and diversity. Shes damned if she does and shes damned if she doesn't. This is the game the Spicer haters love to play.

The last poster is clearly not paying attention. The mayor has been at at least 2 of the BLM events as I have seen here there and no one has raised any concern about that. This proclamation/resolution being proposed is similar to what other mayors have done. The question is why hasn’t our mayor done what other mayors have done which is publicly make a statement about racism and the city’s plan to address this? Then we would not need a resident to take the lead on this

I think the Mayor should be a strong collaborator/contributor to the BLM resolution IMO. She could and should also direct FPD to make low level marijuana drug arrests the very lowest priority by catching, confiscate the drugs and releasing the offender. She might also want to show all of Framingham she is willing to hold accountable those at FPD for the killing of an innocent black man.
