the Mayor's school budget... 2 mil lower

I'm was waiting to see the outcry from anyone in Town over the Mayor's cut in the school budget. She is cutting 2 million from the budget. The new number is 3.1% over last year. The SC had proposed a 4.6% budget.
Now it looks like there will be some cuts would have to be made if the Mayor gets her budget. Much of this relates to the new contract the teachers got, 6.5% over three years with 3.5 % happening 2019-2020.
It costs more money to educate a child here because of our school population needs. I get that. Our school system is as big as some cities and towns in Mass. I get that as well. But I do believe there are savings in the city side of the budget that could help ease the pain at the schools.
Lets see if the people angered over this reduction in budget will take to the streets like the seniors did.

It's ironic that one of the SC members who is trash talking the Mayor, is the same guy who had a part in delaying and restricting the roll out of the cannabis industry here in the Ham. Framingham should have realized significant tax revenue and host agreement revenue a year ago. The 2 million dollars the Mayor is cutting, may have been realized from the cannabis industry already this year, if the companies were allowed to open as Brookline, Leicester and North Hampton and others did.

Not everything in the city is related to pot Jim. I know you try to connect it to every single issue in the city, but that just is not an accurate argument to make. If the city had in fact made $2 million from the sale of pot as you suggest, would every dime of that have gone to the schools? I am in favor of the pot shops but I am not in any way agreeing with your implication that pot shops would have eliminated the school budget issues. That is just fake news.

Given we have heard nothing from parents of these kids going to schools where there are likely to be budget cuts I am not willing to raise my voice about this. I don't have kids in the schools, so if those that do are not concerned enough about this to do something about it then why should I?

Where is the outcry over the budget? Seniors came together and did the work to overturn the mayor’s decision on moving the BOH to Callahan. Time for the parents of school kids to come together on the school budget issue if they think there is a problem. They can’t just sit back and expect others to fight this battle for them. Step up or be quiet. The choice is one every parent needs to make.

Teachers have been pretty quiet about this except for that letter in the Source written by someone I hope is not teaching my kids! The least they could have done was grammar check the dam letter. Shameful example of what our teachers are teaching our kids and most assuredly not a resounding example of why they deserve more money. The blew it on that letter if you ask me.

The added revenue could have gone into the general fund. You can't say 1 or 2 million dollars extra would not make a difference in some of the budget conversations. And what other industry can we collect such taxes and fess from? They blew it and the Mayor is just making it worse.

I'm still waiting to read, someone is stepping forward from the Council or a potential candidate, parent group or a picket line outside the Mayor's office. Then I'll know they are serious.

That letter was to much... probably hurt more than helped.

an extra $2 mil would have helped and you can not deny it especially when there is no reason we don't have it except for our elected dragging their feet. they all new it was going to be a done deal so why not do it in time to help with the budget. just lazy and irresponsible behavior from our elected, all of them
