Hands Free Driving Bill is law

It took 16 years and countless lives for Beacon Hill and the Governor to finally get this done. This will be a game changer I hope.
The new law carries a fine of 100 bucks for first timer violators, 250 for the second and 500 for any violation after that. A grace period until the end of March before fines are levied, but you can still get pulled over and a written warning will be given.

We have been put on notice.

Will be interested in seeing how many people are pulled over, and who those people are. A perfect opportunity for racial profiling if you ask me

A perfect example of how the legislators here in MA drag their feet year after year after year on passing legislation like this. What could possibly be a justifiable argument for not passing this bill for so many years?

I seem to remember Rep Byron Rushing wanted assurances that this law would not be enforced based on race. That was years ago when he was still a rep from Dourchester.

And the it was the amount of the fine that held it up. Some said it would hurt low income drivers.

My friend in California said that the fine for first time was 999.00 and a license suspension. That would certainly make people stop using their phones... anywhere in the country.

But as above said... taking all these years to pass one law that could save countless lives is an example of how little those who are elected year after year get done.

Glad this is now the law and will be following how this plays out.

Anyone know if a ticket for this results in one of those car insurance surcharges for bad driving that sticks with you for years and years and years?

I believe it's a sir charge that will last for 7 years, just like an accident but I will seek clarification.
