The KN95 Masks given out by MEMA
So, everyone cheered the Patriots
owner and Governor Baker when it was disclosed the two made a deal to buy a
plane load of PPE from China. Before the stuff was unloaded, questions about
China's version of our N95 masks was already in the news. Turns out that
China's version (KN95) were tested by scientists at MIT and the masks were
"severely deficient, filtering just 28% of airborne particles - far below
was is considered safe for front line workers". The US standard for N95
masks is 95%. Other masks that were tested from the plane load showed 53% to
90%.
According to the Globe's Matt
Rocheleau, Dugan Arnett and Victoria McGaine, Nursing Homes, long term
healthcare facilities, cops and firemen were given these KN95 masks.
Massachusetts has spent 2 million dollars for the masks from China.
my rant:
They lie and denied knowing anything
about the virus until it's killing us, they sell us inferior PPE products that
may kill many more trying to help the sick and dying and now our own Mass Dep
of Health warned that masks labeled as KN95 recommends that these products
should be used as a face mask only. It's a freaking wonder we don't have more
cops and fireman dropping dead from inferior PPE from China. Word is that the US is planning some sort of restitution from China... the problem with that right now is that China is were we get most of our PPE supplies, reagents, test kits, swaps, etc etc.

You raise all the valid points Jim, the most important being how dependent we are on China, and other countries, for so many supplies. People have predicting a pandemic for years and have raised concerns about supplies. In light of all those warnings, Trump was selling what we did have for PPE and ventilators to foreign countries, including China, and saying the US was not in danger, the virus would go away when the weather warmed up. That tells me another tremendous fault in our presidents knowledge. Hong Kong practically sits on the equator and is hot all the time so why would it die here in warm weather when it thrived in warm temperatures i =n Hong Kong? Not only is he a narcissist, he is also dumb. And those who defend and follow him down these ridiculous paths, like suggesting we inject disinfectants into our bodies are also dumb. They must have never taken a biology class.
The governor may not have known these were inferior, but he should have found out before he bought them, and then let people know what he was offering them instead of being so busy touting what a great job he did getting these masks, but then honesty and tranparancy have never been Baker's strong suits
Any way to find out if the masks supplied to Framingham police and fire are these inferior masks? We should know that, and those wearing them should be given this information for sure. To not do so leaves them with a very false sense of security. Can the Mayor or Wong give us this information?
a lousy mask is better than no mask but you should know what type of protection you are getting
I'm not sure anyone from the City would answer honestly... given the liability issue, but I will ask Chief Trask.
Where does the money come from for the police and gore to buy these?
Curious what liability the city has if a city employee needs a ventilator or dies?
Are these masks used in any other places in the Ham, like nursing homes? Any way to find that out?
I wrote to the BOH and both Chief's answered.
FPD Chief Trask has received KN95 masks as well as FFD. It appears that the KN95 masks are not being used in both departments. They both seem to know that the KN95 masks are not the same level of protection for the employee's. I do wonder when they first knew that. Given the amount of FPD employee's who sue the Town at every moment, I wonder if these same trouble makers will find a way to sue us again.
Funds for all PPE come out of the budget and kept track of for possible reimbursement from the State and Feds.
The liability question is hanging over everyone now, especially for front line essential workers, and first responders. Since we are self insured, I believe we would pick up any and all medical expenses incurred by any of our employees not covered under the Towns medical insurance.
The question will be, did the City provide adequate protection for it's employees. And can the employee prove they didn't.
these KN95 masks have been deployed in at least 1 Nursing home that I'm aware of and probably more. It infuriates me that these inferior masks were given to front-line health care workers in an environment where the largest increase in patient death has occurred and continues to increase. Any health care worker should not be required to wear the KN95 masks and their employers should send the KN95 back to China. Almost as good is not good enough for health workers.
