Suffolk Superior judge rules in favor of vaccine mandate

As Charlie ponders mask mandates in all public space, the subject of vaccine mandates wasn't on the agenda for the past BOH meeting with the mayor. Like the past Mayor, Charlie seems to be waiting patiently for the crisis to end without much regard to the increasing positive tests and hospitalizations. He should not let the unions dictate policy in the midst of a public health emergency.

Both seemed to be reluctant to ruffle any feathers but as we know, there are a bunch of school employees who are not vax and boosted. I've not seen any reports of how many police and fire employees are not vaxed, but judging from the push-back of the Boston unions, I'd bet the number here are above 20% who have not been vaxed.

It's way past the time for a vaccine mandate for all employees of the Town, including the schools and their staffs. The BOH and the Mayor should feel better about the judges decision in Boston.

The vaccine mandate for City of Boston employees survived a legal challenge days before it's set to take effect. Suffolk Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Locke, who presided over a hearing Wednesday between the city and first responder unions, said he will not "enjoin the enforcement of the policy as of January 15," reports Boston Herald's Sean Philip Cotter.

Three unions -- Boston Police Superior Officers Federation, Boston Police Detectives Benevolent Society, and Boston Firefighters Union Local 718 -- filed suit against the city's mandate, arguing that permitting city officials to quickly change terms of its agreement with the unions threatens collective bargaining. City officials say the mandate is good policy that helps curb the spread and deadly effects of the virus.

What the heck is Charlie waiting for? The Board of Health pretty much told him they think there should be a mandate, most of those who spoke at the Zoom meeting also said we should have a mandate, and then he asks the BOH to put it in writing. Does he not understand how the process works, that it has to be an agenda item for them to do that? He ran telling us he could hit the ground running because he knows the rules. Apparently that was just another big lie.

shapiro never misses a chance for us to recognize how self centered and stupid he is he actually typed in the comments section of the zoom meeting that if you don't like the way things are then stay home if you are so scared what an example of ignorance that is. obviously he thinks that his rights are more important than anyone elses

Sisitsky won't issue a mask mandate. Now that it looks like the numbers are trending down he will just wait until things are better and then say there is no longer a need. If you ask me, this is just the first of many occasions where we are going to see him chose to not make a decision out of fear of pissing of anyone off. If you are waiting for him to take an action to potentially save your life then you better make sure your life insurance is paid up.

Give the guy a break. He has only been in office for 13 days how could he have known he would have a Covid issue to deal with (ha,ha,ha)? You would have thought he would be ready to make the mandate as soon as he took office if that was what he thinks we should do.

He had a front row seat to the inability of the past administration to mandate masks.

Natick just passed their own mask mandate.

The most compelling public comment was from that in Town ER/ICU nurse with kids.

Rich is still angry over the loss his candidate suffered.

I wonder how much a mask mandate will really help although I am for it. There are lots of people who just ignore the signs on stores saying masks required. If there is no way to enforce it, why bother instituting it?

Given how many people during the meeting said they do their shopping and dining in Sudbury, which has had a mask mandate for almost a month, I would think businesses here in Framingham would be begging the city to institute a mandate. Does anyone know what the downtown businesses or the chamber of commerce position is on this? I would hope the new Mayor knows and would share that with residents. I have been shopping in Sudbury for a month now because you must wear a mask there and I have not seen anyone not obey that, but then, Sudbury residents are more educated, more financially stable, and more factually informed so probably an easier place to have a mandate in effect.

Back in the day, you couldn't get served in any store with no shoes or a shirt, by order of the BOH.
You can't get into a pot shop without a man or women outside checking your ID.

I just heard an Airline who was losing one employee a day (death) before mandating masks.

Valid point on people ignoring the signs. Stores may be forced to have people in the entrance giving out masks. It does seem to work in Cambridge. And while the Supreme Court just ruled against the President's vaccine mandate for employers with over 100 people, the court did rule that the vaccine mandate for health care workers that receive Medicare dollars can stand.

The court ruled that the federal government can not mandate that, but employers have the right to require that themselves, right?

To my surprise, Charlie will mandate masks in public spaces. How could he ever ignore what the BOH suggested and the news of increasing infections. And while the news about virus levels in waste water seem to be something to cheer about, (from the City) as of January 12, the number of people in the City who have tested positive for COVID-19 reached 14,375. Almost 2000 of those positive tests were in the one-week period January 5-12.

As of January 12, Framingham had 3,331 active cases, with 10,719 recovered and 259 fatalities

These numbers only include confirmed cases reported through the Massachusetts data system; the Framingham Health Department does not receive the results from rapid antigen home tests. If you test positive you may not receive a letter or phone call from the Health Department Nurse at this time.

I am curious at why these mandates always take effect at some point in the future. If the problem exists on Friday why wait until Wednesday to put the mandate in place to address the problem?
